This route came together a long time ago and has become a summer staple with a group of riders. It starts in Onekama, north of Manistee on M-22 at the city park just past the ice cream place. The route changes from time to time depending on which direction that we come back. We generally do it as a group ride on one of the Friday’s near the 4th of July. It’s open to anyone, but beware, it is a hammerfest with the paceline averaging 25 or better for LONG stretches of road. We do generally bring a map or two, but if you tag along, a GPS isn’t a bad idea.
And then there are the hills, M-22 is an awesome road riding treasure, but there are some pretty good dune climbs (for Michigan) along the route. It includes long stretches of riding along Lake Michigan, Crystal Lake, and Bear Lake. The organized ride stops for lunch at the Cherry Hut in Beulah (hence the name of the route) and century options abound with starts in Ludington and then stopping in Onekama, or a round trip from Manistee. IF you’re interested in the big group ride get ahold of Jeff at the shop, he’ll have details. If you want to go on your own and want a guide call the shop, there might be someone who wants to go. If it’s a nice day the beach at the park is a nice place to clean up before heading home or to eat. Watch for leg cramps if you go into deeper water…
Meeting spot is on south side of M-22 in Onekama at a city park on the north side of Portage Lake.
